Thelma & Louise: le due ragazze che conquistarono il Far West
Se c’é un luogo che il Cinema ha consacrato al genere maschile, questa é la Monument Valley. Quella pianura desertica scolpita dai fiumi é stata lo sfondo di innumerevoli inseguimenti tra cow-boy e indiani, tra pistoleri e fuorilegge, teatro di avventure e di cieli stellati passati a sorseggiare whiskey pensando alla ragazza del villaggio.
Il Far West é stato il simbolo dell’American Life, fin quando non sono arrivate Thelma & Louise. Il film di Ridley Scott scioglie le briglie alle mogliettine perbene del villaggio dei cow-boy, e le fa sfrecciare tra le strade verso il Nuovo Messico armate di una pistola e di una sete di libertà che scopriranno lungo il loro cammino.
Perchè Thelma & Louise è un viaggio di emancipazione, prima ancora di un’avventura on the road tra le strade dell’Arkansas. Un viaggio che ci racconta tutte le forme di arroganza, di violenza e di soprusi che gli uomini perpetrano ogni giorno verso le donne, dallo stupro alla violenza domestica, passando per l’umiliazione e la mortificazione.
Durante questo viaggio, Thelma & Louise decidono di riappropriarsi di ciò che gli uomini strappano via alle donne: la libertà e il rispetto. E lo fanno a bordo di una Ford Thunderbird, l’uccello di tuono il cui nome trae origine dal folclore degli indo-americani. Le staordinarie Susan Sarandon e Geena Davis scavano nel profondo della propria anima, scoprendo segreti sepolti che hanno dietro sempre e solo lo spaventoso doppio volto dell’uomo.
Nel corso del loro viaggio, Thelma & Louise decidono di non scendere più a compromessi con il genere maschile: niente più sesso senza consenso, niente più apprezzamenti dal camionista di turno, niente più scherzi di pessimo gusto, niente più bugie o finte promesse.
Come due pistolere del far-west, le nostre due cow-girl sono pronte ad uccidere in nome del rispetto. E sono pronte a morire per questo.
La scena finale di questo film entra a pieno titolo nella storia del Cinema. La sequenza a ralenty in cui un esercito di uomini tenta di fermare disperatamente due donne che si lanciano nel vuoto del Grand Canyon è a dir poco emblematica della potenza di questo film. Perchè attraverso quel salto, Thelma & Louise entrano nel Mito, nella Leggenda che fino a quel momento era stata riservata al genere maschile.
Quell’automobile non si schianterà mai a terra: rimarrà sospesa nel cielo, come il volo di un’aquila che non ha nessuna intenzione di farsi addomesticare da un padrone.
