The Elephant Man: il Prodigio del Mostro
Marco Tullio Cicerone, tra le ragioni che dimostrano l’esistenza degli Dei, includeva gli eventi terrificanti; tra questi “la nascita di mostri umani e animaleschi in contrasto con l’ordine naturale”. Lo stesso termine latino monstrum indica essenzialmente un segno divino, un prodigio, e deriva dal tema di monere: avvisare, ammonire.
Il mostro, nel significato originario, è l’apparire, il manifestarsi, il mostrarsi improvviso di qualcosa di straordinario, di divino, che viola la natura e che è un ammonimento e un avvertimento per l’uomo. Di fronte al mostro, l’anima dell’uomo non può che oscillare tra la meraviglia e l’orrore. E non può esimersi dall’interrogare se stesso, la propria coscienza.
E’ per questo che il cinema da sempre ha attinto dalla mitologia, dalla storia, dalla narrativa per mostrarci ciò che più ci mette di fronte a noi stessi: i mostri sono il nostro riflesso, l’orrore che si cela dietro la nostra apparente normalità.
Ma forse nessun archetipo di mostro è più sconvolgente di John Merrick in The Elephant Man di David Lynch, la cui anima pura e buona, la cui grandezza e infinita pietà verso la crudeltà umana mettono a nudo ogni nostro peccato.
Il film di Lynch è assolutamente sconcertante e nello stesso tempo infinitamente commovente. Un capolavoro assoluto che a distanza di decenni ancora lacera le nostre certezze.
